La Period Creuse

From the Bookshelf: La Period Creuse

The Lit Cafe has always been a refuge for me during fallow periods or what the French call “La Period Creuse.” I have always loved the idea of this site - wanting it be a community of interesting ideas and actions. The obvious start was books - a natural home for all these things. But 10 years on—is that enough? So, the challenge over the next few months will be to reshape and renew The Cafe…and perhaps myself along the way.

MOFAD (Museum of Food and Drink) has relocated from East Williamsburg to a compact space on Brooklyn’s waterfront. Destined to get better foot traffic, the museum is currently featuring an exhibit on Flavor: The World to Your Brain.

The 2017 Whitney Biennial
Whitney Museum of American Art
New York, NY
Through June 11

The 2017 Biennial is not an aesthetic pleasure.  It's jarring and amazing, confounding and curious. Even the art that appears beautiful on the surface has a hidden dark side, like the title image above that features people trapped in an elevator, fighting off bugs.

Author: Chandra Ram
Year of Release: 2018

When I was a kid, coconut was the gateway for me to try just about any Indian dish, and I firmly believe that rule applies to adults, too. This recipe is perfect for people who are afraid to try Indian food; it’s gently spiced, creamy and impossible not to love. I serve it over rice to soak up every bit of the sauce.
